East Mount Ida Street is a cozy little stretch of low-income housing, safely nestled between the railroad tracks and the flight pattern for Washington National Airport. Ideal, really, if you like the sounds of screeching jet engines mixed with the low rumble of freight trains.

The address from the 990 forms pointed to a gray clapboard house that had been divided into apartments. I checked the names on the mailbox. All three organizations were listed, but, from the plastic toys on the porch and rusted cars surrounding it, I guessed the address was just a mail drop.

Parking across the street and half a block back from the drop, I switched on the camera, rested the end of the 300-mm lens on the steering wheel, and waited. And waited. I could feel my hair grow. The glamour of investigation. Problem was, the Barnetts and Mal had burned up most of my afternoon. I’d run out of time. Hart Wimple was expecting me in twenty minutes.

So I popped the trunk and took out a toy I had made. A little webcam with a tiny SD card recorder. I set it to capture a frame every second for the next twenty-four hours. The street seemed to be empty. Good. I set the webcam/recorder in a clump of bushes with the lens trained on the doorway. Smile, you’re on Gidneycam.
